Horrible Bosses (2011)

Director: Seth Gordon
Writers:  Michael Markowitz, John Francis Daley
Cast:      Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, Jamie Foxx
Three friends conspire to murder their awful bosses when they realize they are standing in the  way of their happiness.

After the first half hour of the film, I thought the film was a miss but it get progressively funnier towards the end as the humor becomes more even. Tremendous cast makes what otherwise would have been an ordinary convoluted comedy into a good film. There are a couple of 'The Wire' characters in the film too. Didn't realize one of the characters was Colin Farrell till I saw the closing credits as well.

Midnight in Paris (2011)

Director: Woody Allen
Writer:    Woody Allen
Cast:      Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Adrien Brody, Michael Sheen, Marion Cotillard
A romantic comedy about a family travelling to the French Capital Paris for business. The party includes a young engaged couple forced to confront the illusion that a life different from their own is better.

Owen Wilson plays a character reminiscent of so many characters played by Woody Allen himself in his previous films and he manages to pull it off without being cringe worthy. The whole atmosphere of the film is retro which is in suit with its plot. A very good romantic comedy of a different philosophical kind.

Lektionen in Finsternis (Lessons of Darkness) (1992)

Creator: Werner Herzog
The film shows the disaster of the Kuwaitian oil fields in flames. In contrast to other common documentary films there are no comments and few interviews. Just shows the destructive beauty of wars. Images that cannot be reproduced artificially with any kind of budget.

My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done (2009)

Director: Werner Herzog
Writers:  Werner Herzog, Herbert Golder
Cast:      Michael Shannon, Willem Dafoe, Chloe Sevigny
Inspired by a true crime, a man begins to experience mystifying events that lead him to slay his mother with a sword.

The film is a collaboration between two legendary filmmakers Werner Herzog and David Lynch (Producer). You can see elements from both their styles in this film. In the beginning itself we know about the murder, murderer and where he is hiding. We learn about the murderer as the film progresses through several flashbacks when events are narrated by those who knew him. Its a good little film made on a tiny budget.

Encounters at the End of the World (2007)

Director: Werner Herzog
Writer:    Werner Herzog
Filmmaker Werner Herzog travels to Antarctica to capture its landscape's rarely seen beauty on film.

As Herzog himself says in the films, its not about fluffy penguins. Its about humans that are there and their motivations. We see many quirky characters out there and Herzog has many quirky questions for them.

Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010)

Director: Werner Herzog
Writers:  Werner Herzog, Judith Thurman
Werner Herzog gains exclusive access to film inside the Chauvet caves of Southern France, capturing the oldest known pictorial creations of humankind in their astonishing natural setting.

Documentary was filmed in 3-D but I watched it in 2-D in my laptop. Narration from Herzog himself is passionate and the postscript is excellent. Certainly worth a watch from the master director.

In Bruges (2008)

Director: Martin McDonagh
Writer:    Martin McDonagh
Cast:      Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Ralph Fiennes
Holed up in Bruges, Belgium after a difficult job, two hit men begin to differ on their views of life and death as they become used to local customs.

This was my fourth watch I think and it never fails. One of the best dark comedy of this side of the century with a very Pulp Fiction vibe to the script.
